Tips to Keep Your Pets Happy as Summer Ends
Summer is drawing to a close and the chilly autumn weather is fast approaching. We realize that soon winter will not be far behind, and we should be thinking about ways to keep our pets warm and cozy as the temperatures start to fall. When Jack Frost is nipping at your nose, your pets are shivering right there along beside you! Don't let the fur coats fool you. Make sure your pet is warm and cozy all season long!
As Mother Nature drops her greenery in forest and field, remember to take the time to check your pets skin and fur for those pesky fleas and ticks . Fallen leaves and dead grass are perfect hiding places for the creepy crawlies! Just as many children enjoy romping in the fallen leaves our pets also enjoy playing in a good leaf pile! Many people find this time of year especially tough on their pets as the crafty little critters (Fleas &Ticks) are looking for a warm place to stay and a tasty meal. Heart worm medication and flea products should still be used until your veterinarian tells you the weather is cold enough to stop the bugs from bugging your fur friend.
Long coated pets can tolerate colder temperatures longer than their short haired pals, but they also need to be watched for injuries from the cold. Remember to check feet for ice and debris after outside romps. Beware of salt and deicer used on side walks and roads they can play havoc with your pets pads. Tiny ice balls can form between fluffy feet and cause irritation. Keep the hair trimmed between toes. It is wise to always rinse feet with tepid water after an out door walk. Sensitive noses and ear tips can get frost bite so don't expose your pet for long periods of time in bitter cold
Antifreeze tastes wonderful to pets so always store it, and other chemicals in a safe place away from your fuzzy friends. There are now brands available for sale that are animal friendly check your local auto parts store.
Your mother always told you to put on your coat and "button up!" You should tell your short haired dog the same thing. Sometimes their own coat just isn't enough. Many items are available at your local pet shop or if you are computer savvy with a click of the mouse. Many styles of coats, boots and other pet clothes ranging from vests to the latest sweater that your pooch will love to show off, can be found. With a little time spent shopping (and who doesn't love that ) you can outfit your pets to keep them fashionable and comfy on the days that they'd rather stay inside!
Most pets love being outside, but sometimes it's just too cold out for even the roughest and toughest of breeds to stay outside. Your dogs should be a part of your family and live inside with you but when they have to be outside for short periods it is great to have a cozy place to go. A wide variety of dog houses for all shapes and sizes are now available to keep Fido cozy in the cooler weather. Remember to include a warm blanket .
Just as you recall fondly your first blanket, and how warm and toasty it was on a cold night. Many pets also enjoy that same experience. Please remember to make sure it is washable and has no frilly or stringy edges that can be chewed and swallowed.
Please don't forget to make a warm shelter for the less fortunate feral cats that can be found in our town. If you know of any of these poor creatures in need of homes contact your local shelter for help in humanly catching and placing these animals in forever homes.
Have a colorful and bountiful Harvest Season.
With Hugs,Joyce
